+25% productivity increase in order preparation thanks to WMS-driven multi-picking
Case study — SVR Skipper Group
In certain logistical contexts, picking is done simultaneously in carton and piece form. The proportion between these two methods fluctuates significantly depending on the item.
Should cartons and parts be picked from the same location? Or should the two flows be separated to gain efficiency? The SVR Skipper group has decided — and the results speak for themselves.
The challenge: collecting cardboard and coins from the same locations
At SVR Skipper, orders regularly combine full cartons and individual items (mixed cartons). In a typical picking environment, this means:
- Oversized spaces to accommodate both collection methods
- Large areas that lengthen the routes
- Productivity is capped, especially on multi-reference cartons
The strategic question: how to isolate the picking of parts in a small area while maintaining the consistency of orders?
The WMS answer: multi-picking with a dual slab
The WMS allows the sampling flows to be separated into two distinct slabs :
- Cardboard slab : collection of complete boxes, in appropriately sized locations
- Piece slab : detailed sampling on a much smaller, at eye level, well-localized, allowing for multi-order preparations
By focusing the detailed picking process on appropriate picking types, we significantly increase the productivity of assembling multi-item cartons. This increase fully justifies the need for two trays and the consolidation step required to reconstitute the order.
Cascading replenishment: the key to fluidity
To ensure this organization functions smoothly, the WMS orchestrates cascading replenishment using several strategies:
- Reserve → Carton Picking → Part Picking : standard flow with progressive feed
- Reserve → Direct Picking : for high-turnover items in detail
- Mixed : Reserve → Simultaneous Carton and Piece Picking
The WMS adapts the replenishment strategy according to the nature of each item, ensuring that the right stock is available in the right place at the right time.
At SVR Skipper, the implementation of multi-picking has resulted in a fine control of the contents of multi-reference cartons, much more precise order tracking, and an exact knowledge for each pallet of the cartons present and for each SSCC of the contents in items.
