When the WMS guides each step of the receiving process, quality is no longer a risk
Case study — Cooper & Merck Laboratories (QA Module) + Carter Cash & La Bécanerie (Reverse)
Receiving processes can be considerably complicated by additional tasks: sampling, conformity checks, quality isolation, management of unannounced returns…
These tasks make the operation complex, time-consuming, and practically impossible to delegate to a temporary worker. Implementing tools that capitalize on experience and guide the operator becomes strategic.
Quality Module: Item-Driven Receiving Processes
For Merck and Cooper laboratories, receiving raw materials involves a series of critical tasks:
- Sampling : according to rules specific to each product or product family
- Control tasks : verifying the presence of certificates, product identification, quantity per carton compliance, and other elements
- Quality isolation : Once due diligence has been completed, certain products are isolated for investigation by the quality department before use.
Thanks to the QA module, the WMS configures the entire receiving process by product or family: sampling requirements, control tasks with pre-provided answers, conditional chaining of tasks (like operating ranges), and temporary destination to the quality department.
The operator is guided entirely by the tool, which adapts the requirements according to each item received. The WMS ensures compliance with processes throughout the entire chain—a major challenge for adhering to GDP and GMP in the pharmaceutical industry.
Reverse module: identifying and processing unauthorized returns
Reverse logistics is particularly complex in the case of wild returns — returns for which no notification has been made.
At Carter Cash and La Bécanerie, the reverse logistics module has transformed this process:
- Rapid identification : by simply scanning the product and identifying the recipient, the system traces it back to the original delivery.
- Automatic generation : a return notice is automatically created, linking it to the completed shipment.
- After-sales service chain : this link between returns and shipping directly assists the after-sales service in the commercial processing
- Specific controls : control tasks specific to the return process are triggered — controls that would not be required during a standard supplier receipt
Depending on the product families and customers, checks before reintegration into stock are systematically carried out and tracked.
By combining the Quality module for receiving and the Reverse module for returns, the WMS transforms two historically complex and time-consuming processes into controlled, traceable, and delegable workflows. Individual expertise is replaced by a managed and adaptable process.
